Wind Conducting

The graduate wind conducting program is a small and selective class of experienced students who qualify for matriculation on the basis of demonstrated achievements and potential for development.

The Master of Music degree prepares conductors for excellence in the secondary school band field, entrance to advanced graduate study in conducting, or entry level band positions in higher education. The Doctor of Musical Arts degree is tailored for conductors that aspire to advance music and bands through a teaching/conducting career in higher education or the professional level. Conducting majors who receive Graduate Teaching Assistantships participate in all musical and administrative aspects of the University Band program. Awarding of band assistantships is based on teaching skills and demonstrated excellence in the profession. It is expected that all conductors will have a lifetime interest in score study, interpretation, ensemble and rehearsal pedagogy, academic study, leadership development and service to the profession.
